I was really out of this one. Nothing related to cookies or things like
that. This was a classic MTU problem between a Linux system and a Windows
system. Packets that could not be fragmented had to be and it hung the
transfer. I was using an implementation of pppoe for my ADSL connection
that did not work well with Win/Linux networks.
I installed the RoaringPenguin (http://www.roaringpenguin.com) distribution
of pppoe and it now works like a charm.
