I have the same basic setup as the original post. Linux box plugged into
a cable modem and serving to a PC with Win98(and a Mac). I had to
install IE 5 on the PC for work related reasons. IE 5 detected that my
ISP supports DHCP and found the proxy address. It reconfigured my
network setup for DHCP and plugged the proxy address in there for me. I
had to reconfigure the Win98 network control panel back to my local IP
settings(192.168.x.x, etc).
