I didn't use kppp. Yesterday I uncommented the OUTERIF=ppp0 line in
pmfirewall.conf, and now I don't get the 'device not found' message.
This surprised me, because the reason I had commented it out was that I
was trying all of those different options I had mentioned. Anyway, I'm
happy.

Still no mail unless I shut down pmfirewall. I'll check for the ports
you mentioned.
